I have found a software which Shares Microsoft Project schedules with team. Includes Project Portfolio Management, Issue Tracking, Risk Management, Timesheet Management, Document Management, Calendar Management, Forums, Reports and Project Dashboard.

A good hosted Project Management software that suits my EPM needs is called valleyspeak project server, which I found at http://www.valleyspeak.com. One of the main reasons why I like the software is the fact that I could continue to work in Microsoft Project 2007 while sharing my Microsoft Project plans with my teams.

ValleySpeak Project Server provides 100% 2-way integration with Microsoft Project 2007. While Project Managers can continue to plan and manage projects using Microsoft Project 2007 as usual, Team Members can now view and submit updates to the project plans in real time, simply by using any web browser.

Because it is a hosted service, I did not have to buy expensive software or deal with installation and maintenance headaches. The functionality that I have with valleyspeak to manage my geographically dispersed teams works well for me. We also evaluated Basecamp and some other solutions but were not impressed.

ExecutiveBrief on "The Pros and Cons of SaaS"

Much has been said lately about Software as a Service (SaaS), which is often interchangeably referred to as “cloud computing”. While pundits may disagree on whether SaaS is cloud computing, its primary feature is application provided as a service to customers via the internet. Because applications are hosted, this eliminates the need for installation and running of applications on clients’ computers, or even servers, as well as maintenance and support. Moreover, SaaS reduces the need to purchase and maintain hardware.

But before getting into the much-praised or marketed trend, it is worth considering first why SaaS is such a hot commodity nowadays. According to experts, security, maintenance, and cost are among the top reasons why SaaS is being embraced by enterprises.

Moreover, due to the challenges that face companies regarding outsourcing, such as communication gaps and security, SaaS either supplements the need of businesses to outsource parts of their IT requirements. This is especially helpful for small and medium-size businesses that do not have large IT departments, or those that can only afford to pay general IT workers instead of specialists. Because staffing has become problematic due to reduced budgets that affect tech spending, SaaS offers a way to meet their technology requirements without spending more on overhead.

Whereas the application service provider (ASP) business did not make as much mark as it should have in providing enterprise computing, SaaS is being touted as the trend that will replace and even overcome ASP. Scaling was ASP’s main challenge, which required “separate execution environment” or different server environments for hosting different applications. SaaS replaces multiple resources to run applications with shared computing resources, such as the same software version that runs on the same platform. This proves cheaper for end-clients.

SaaS providers offer flexible contracts that have targeted costs for specific services. Many tech projects run for only a few months, so services that provide exactly what businesses need in terms of scope and time, with corresponding costs, are advantages that SaaS vendors are only too happy to explore.

SaaS provide specialized software that increasingly meet clients’ needs. As vendors gain more knowledge about what businesses want, these insights are incorporated into version upgrades, which means better software and, just as important, more responsive service.

It is common knowledge in any industry that freeing up the need to manage back-office processes, including technology services, allows companies to concentrate on bigger, more important business areas. Perhaps at the IT level itself, this is also true. Freeing up the upkeep of some technology processes allows IT departments to focus on the services that they can provide in-house. In effect, SaaS vendors upgrade the quality of both hosted applications and, indirectly, the quality of services of in-house IT departments.

Next part: Why businesses should be cautious about SaaS.
white on "Introduction to Atomkeep -- the next big thing"

Hello everyone,

My name is Olexandr Prokhorenko. As you might already know, I was the one of two guys who started the BossTalks.com in the beginning of March 2007.

Today I'd like to share my next big thing with you. So, please, let me introduce Atomkeep - the service that solves the problem of information redundancy.

So what actually Atomkeep is? We're the first service that created to really share the people profiles. Either you're a social networker, or a job seeker or a professional - all of you are having the same problem of data redundancy. There are too many social networks around, too many job boards, directories and sites that want you to keep your profile there.

Being an active member of any community requires you to keep your profile up to date all the time. Nobody likes "dead heads". Once your Internet exposure is starting to grow, you're starting to spend much more time on keeping the things in sync. But we can take save your time. Don't waste your time on routine clicks, but have fun. This is what Atomkeep for.

Let me give you another example. Have you ever faced a choice if you should sign to one more (maybe, more interesting or narrow) job site, but was pissed off and decided not to do this when you saw how big is the resume profile in it? I bet you did. But we can help you here as well. This is a typical situation when Atomkeep becomes a priceless service to use (and stays free!).

Or might be you are a business owner and have listed your business contacts at the tens (or even hundreds) of different boards and directories, but it's time to move on and your contact are changing? Most of the time changes are good if everyone knows the new contacts. However, can you imagine the crowd of potential clients who got lost and choose your competitor over you just because they got the wrong phone number? Atomkeep is a good service to use now.

This is our first day of public release. Our team has been working on it for a while and now we are ready for a launch. So go ahead, take a quick look, register there, it's absolutely free and takes only a minute, and give us your feedback.

Atomkeep is built for users. Users are the most important elements in the Atomkeep design and we're committed to complete user satisfaction. Let us know, either you like something or not. Any opinion counts and valuable for us.

So, thank you and welcome to Atomkeep!

Sincerely yours,
Olexandr Prokhorenko,
Founder of Atomkeep.

Hi guys, I have been working from home for about 5 years. and sometimes its great and sometimes its not. I love the ability to work my hours and do things on my time. However, it can sometimes be very isolating. I think I do miss the buzz of the office world and the people contact

However on the hother hand, I dont miss the office politics and the every day work commute. I think the ideal situation may be to work from home 3 day s a week and 2 days in an office setting.

Everybody has different goals. Personally I think MBA as a helpful, but not necessary knowledge. It does cost a lot - and before investing that much you need to calculate your ROI. Sometimes you can better ROI by gaining by specific knowledge - project management, finances, law, etc. - but not the "whole" MBA package. I would say we can think of MBA as some kind of "all-stuff-need-to-know-crash-course", but again - it's all about personal goals and ROI :-)

Boy..I agree!...I have worked in both- office and home. I feel even more responsible when I work from home...I know no one is watching- but at the end of the day- you have to show some output! It's tougher when you are a non-billable person...and it's even more tougher when your supervisors trust you with your work!

But apart from all the said above, I must say that when it comes to working from home- you are your own boss- I can be more organized, less of distractions (you see I don't like to have colleagues around ALL the time) and of course do things at my own pace- that includes having my meal in front of my PC too! However, it'd be nice to work in an office set up too once in a while- You see, the PC cannot be always the best of a man's companion!

And some- o' well- guess I still have oodles of catching up to do- despite being hooked on the PC almost 24/7. But definitely teaches me one thing- get up- get out of your mundane stuff - think- think- think- create...imagine...inspire!

Man- ager! What a "coveted"title! The above thoughts are noble, fair and frank...and it depicts the thought process of a new era of generation...However, ask someone who comes from a different world- the "third world" namely- coming in with a baggage of oppression and suppression and in many cases, still continuing in the same social and cultural sphere. They'll tell you the manager is the be it and end of of the so called life. In fact for many in the third world- (that's a considerable population)...this title is what many dream for their sons and daughters...a metaphor for superiority, class and honor!

Why manager has to be better- ?? duh! try working with a spineless one, and you'll know. Yes- to all those who are saying, "been there, done that"...till you experience it- you'll never know the insanity that can drive you to misery! Decision- making; strategizing; to a certain level- a task master and to a higher level- some one who can inspire! Not every employee is intrinsically motivated...and not every one are doers-( forget "go-getters")- till they are told what to do- sometimes even the best and brightest of lot! A man-ager is essential- a better manager is inevitable!

susanvarghese2007 on "Does an IT professional need MBA?"

Are you kidding me? MBA's rock! The experience of being part of a B-school is what makes an MBA an MBA. Classes at odd hours...tight deadlines...assignments to be submitted on a daily basis...group work (?) and managing free riders?? And not to mention creating those classy ppt's at 4:00 in the morning and sharing a pot of coffee with folks you just don't want to work with. (Forget sharing coffee with) That's management dude!

Till I went to a B- school- I never realized what all the glam was about the so called MBA's. When I was there- I thought it was all about learning- googling to be precise and of course learning how to effectively "plagiarize". Each day is hard work- but at the end of it all- I realize that the process of getting the MBA was the "actual learning" in itself as against all the OD, OB, T &D, or Management Concepts...

Now does an IT professional need an M.B.A?? Having worked in the IT sector for a few years now- I can certainly tell you this- if you want to climb up the ladder- you gotta have those 3 letters next to your name...If you are in a managerial role- you'll do better with an M.B.A. But if you are a born, natural leader- trust me, you'll still do better with an M.B.A!!

green on "Why "manager" has to be better?"

While working with different and diverse developers from all around the world I noticed one common thing. Many of them see management position as an ultimate necessary and the only right goal of their career. But why is that? I spent some time thinking about that, but still no nice and reasonable answer. I can see that many developers think that "manager" sounds better and more impressive. Many developers see "manager" to be the guy to act bossy and tell everybody what to do. Somebody who have power. Is it just the human nature to be more powerful comparing to other people? "Status" kind of thing?

But in reality to be good manager is an hard job to do. And it's none of what people like to think about it. I am developer, manager and whoever you want to call it. I do not care really much about titles, until I do what I like. And when you manage other people, you have to admit they are the main workforce. Not you. You are the guide, may be the bridge closing some gaps. But those people are the best, because they are important and really meaningful.

This is also one of the reasons why startups can be built by developers, not managers. Well, it can be built by manager who has some money to hire developers. ;-) But to launch from the ground, to built from scratch, to make it happen - you need to be hands on. That's why no matter how deep in managing I am digging, I still remain hands on the coding. I do my own code, fix others, review... Learn new things - because it's a never ending process. You always have something to learn.

The best management goal is to give developers and opportunity to do their job. Just ask them, show right directions, and keep within it. If they are the best (but you hire best, right?) they'll really accomplish the job perfectly. Well, if they are not -- you'll have a lot of job on mentoring and guiding... imagine you have several "not best" developers, and it'll mean you have to work really hard. But it's not management then, again. ;-)

What do you think? Any comments are highly appreciated!

white on "Take your chance to get a FREE iPod!"

Dear Subscribers,

We are inviting you to take the challenge to win a FREE iPod and FREE iTunes cards!

As the BossTalks.com team promised some time ago, we're preparing different raffles and giveaways for our subscribers. Now it's time for the first one. We are going to perform a raffle among the subscribers, who'll be chosen for the most interesting topics covered during the challenge.

Our raffle includes:

FREE iPod shuffle!!
The 1GB iPod shuffle lets you wear up to 240 songs1 on your sleeve. Or your lapel. Or your belt. Clip on iPod shuffle and wear it as a badge of musical devotion.

You know what they say about good things and small packages. But when something 1.62 inches long and about half an ounce holds up to 240 songs, “good” and “small” don’t cut it. Especially when you can listen to your music for up to 12 continuous hours.2 In fact, iPod shuffle just may be the biggest thing in small.

Clip it to your coin pocket. Clip it to your bag. No matter where you clip your skip-free iPod shuffle, you’ll have instant access to music. In silver, pink, green, blue, and orange, iPod shuffle goes with everything. Put it on, turn it up, and turn some heads.

FREE iTunes Gift Certificate with the value of $15

FREE iTunes Gift Certificate with the value of $10

The challenge starts right away, 9/2/2007 and will run for the rest of the month. At the 1st of next month (10/1/2007) we'll post a list of winners. The top 3 ones will get the prizes instantly - either iPod or iTunes card.

We'll do our best to be very objective and give the prizes to the best ones. However, if you're good, but you would not win this time, we will include you into the next raffle, so you'd not loose your chance to get a next FREE iPod (or even something more)!

Thank you for staying with us and the best of luck to all of you! And remember, if you win, then everybody wins!

P.S. We'll need to get at least 30 new posts within the raffle period, otherwise, we'll have to extend it. But you will still have the chance to win, no worries.

Hi!
We're using Wrike.com. It works for both: project management and bug+issue tracking. It’s very simple. To track a bug I create an email to somebody in my team, put wrike’s address into CC field, add a screenshot and some comments. The task on the bug is automatically put into the system and we track it together. The tool is cheap too, cause you get like 3 GB of storage for the same $49 per month.
